  horned lark   Common Name: Horned Lark

  Description: They are about 6.5 inches in length and have a thin bill with black mask, horns, and breast band. They have a white or yellow throat. They have grayish-brown upper parts with pale under parts. The Horned Lark has a black tail with white outer tail feathers and dark legs. They have black tufts of feathers on their heads that may resemble horns.   Habitat: Grassland
         
  Food: Primarily seeds and lesser quantities of insects.   Enemies: Farming operations destroy many nests. Raccoons, skunks and house cats are also enemies.
         
  Range & migration: Horned Larks live from Alaska down south into Mexico. They are a
short distance migrant bird and most United States residents are permanent.
  Reproduction: Horned Larks are monogamous and the female lays eggs in a nest near a grass clump or clod of manure. She lays 3-5 eggs, which are gray and sometimes spotted with brown, Incubation lasts roughly about 11-12 days. The young stay in the nest for a short 9-12 days and are fed by both parents. They usually have one brood a year.
