  night heron   Common Name: Black Crowned Night Heron

  Description: Its plumage is gray and white with a distinctive black top and a pair of white feathers that extend from the back of the head. During the breeding season, the black feathers from the head and back emit a bluish-green gloss and the legs become red.   Habitat: They live in wooded swamps, ponds, lakes and tropical mangroves. They have also been found in rice fields and other habitats. They stay close to water with vegetation such as, reeds, trees and mangroves where they roost and take cover.
         
  Food: fish, leeches, earthworms, aquatic, and terrestrial insects. Crayfish, mussels squid, amphibians, lizards, snakes, rodents, birds, eggs, carrion, plant materials.   Enemies: Humans have hunted herons for food.
         
  Range & migration: They breed from central Washington, southern Manitoba and New Brunswick and south to Paraguay. They winter as far north as southern New England. They also live in Europe, Asia and Africa.   Reproduction: They lay three to four bluish green eggs around February and March and again in June or July. Both parents incubate for about 24 to 26 days. Both parents feed the young by regurgitation. After six to seven weeks, the young leave the nest.
