  Description: Pheasants are large game birds measuring 21-36 inches in length, with a wingspan of up to 32 inches. Males are colorful with blue-black heads, red eye patches, and long pointed tails. Both males and females have mottled brown feathers. They have short yellow bills and short legs.   Habitat: Farmlands and grasslands
         
  Food: Diet is mostly grains, seeds, acorns, and wild berries, also insects and snails.   Enemies: Predators like foxes and coyote, also human hunters and habitat destruction.
         
  Range & migration: Pheasants exist across the mid to northern United States and southern Canada. Populations may be decreasing on the east coast. They do not migrate.   Reproduction: Pheasants breed once a year. Shallow nests are usually on the ground. In the spring, females lay10-12 green eggs and incubate them for 3-4 weeks.
         
  More information: Asian pheasants were introduced in the 1850s in California, as game birds.
