During our stay in the Douglas Creek area our group saw (and heard)
many different types of animal species living in the same general
area as our base camp. The Wilderness Technology Alliance (WTA)
and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) were kind enough to arrange
for some experts on local wildlife to come out and visit us at camp.
The first visitor we had was the "Batman". He spent the
last light of day telling us the types of bats that lived in eastern
Washington area, and showing us pictures that he had brought with
him. When the last light of day had faded away "Batman"
set up a mist net (a specialized bat net that, when placed over
water, is ignored by the bats and they are then trapped in the net
for observation) and we were able to catch a small brown bat in
the net. We contained the bat for a short period of time, and released
it unharmed after a few minutes. The other wildlife specialist that
visited us was a marine biologist. He spent a while explaining the
local aquatic ecosystem, as well as the trail's direct effect upon
it.
