Antiquities Celebration

On National Public Lands Day, September 30, 2006, Cañon City, Colorado celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the Antiquities Act of 1906-a measure that protects and preserves archaeological and historic properties. The focus of this celebration was a series of free activities to honor Marshall P. Felch and the dinosaur fossils he uncovered in the 1880's. Volunteers were present at a series of free stops around Canon City for the public to enjoy. One of the special features of the day was that after a long search, direct decedents of Marshall and Amanda Felch returned to Canon City to help us celebrate!

"I should think that if a petition was forwarded to the head of the Genl. Land Office in Washington to have these lands set aside for fossil explorations, and at the same time leave any or all such lands open for bona-fide Homestead Entry = bar out the preemption and timber culture nuisance = nests where all these frauds on on the public domain are hatched = there would be no trouble in getting such a measure through - as it seems to be in the line of the present policy of that Dept."
