Salamanders are marked with florescent number tags in the lab (look where the pencil is pointing). First the salamanders are anesthetized and then the needle shown above is used to inject the tag under the skin of the salamander. The salamanders are revived, held overnight for observation, and then release the next day exactly where they were captured.
