Weighing a salamander
Photo courtesy of the National Park Service

Each salamander that is captured is weighed using a spring scale. Brittany is weighing a very small larval salamander that needs to stay in water since it still has gills. Once the salamander is weighed, it is released back where it was originally found and the bag of water is weighed again. This total is subtracted from the first weight so the salamanders weight can be recorded.
