F.I.R.E. Up Projects

FIRE Up projects are determined by BLM Idaho employees and community partners. Student tasks vary from analyzing fire danger of homes and other structures to gathering vegetation data to see how much fuel there is for fires on the open land. Students may also analyze the composition and amount of fuel in a given area both before and after fires to see if the BLM has met its management objectives or if desirable plants are returning to the area. In both large and small towns, city governments and homeowners associations have used the students' data to apply for grants to protect citizens' properties from fire danger. In 2010, students will do vegetation inventories as a first step to creating a restoration plan for a recently burned area on the Boise foothills front.
