Away from the rivers where rainwater collects
with little to no outlet, a special collection of species
survive in the understory. Look for sweetbay magnolia
and gallberry holly along side countless mosquitos. Water
persists in the bogs much of the year and is stained tea-brown
from the tannic acid in fallen deciduous leaves.
